PWR321 vs PWR330: Check Each Power Rail

Compare IC693PWR321 and IC693PWR330 by individual rail capacity, not total watts alone. Document the rack load and request an identified spare quote.

Two Series 90-30 power supplies can both carry a 30 W description and still offer different capacity on the rail your rack needs most. That makes total wattage a poor shortcut for spare selection. A quotation can look correct at family level while leaving the actual backplane load insufficiently reviewed.

The IC693PWR321 and IC693PWR330 comparison is a useful example. Start with the installed load by rail, then examine the proposed supply. Do not start with an available 30 W unit and assume that the rack will adapt to it.

The important difference is inside the total

The GE Fanuc Series 90-30 Installation and Hardware Manual, GFK-0356Q, documents a 30 W total limit for the standard IC693PWR321, with a 15 W limit on its +5 V output. It describes the high-capacity IC693PWR330 as allowing the full 30 W to be drawn from +5 V, subject to the overall output limits.

Those ratings are not additive promises. A supply’s individual output capacities and combined limit must both be respected. The historical manual is a technical reference for the documented hardware; obtain the applicable documentation for the exact revision and installation before approving a replacement.

This article does not declare the two models universally interchangeable or assign either one to a particular rack. The comparison explains why a purchasing description needs more than a shared total-power figure.

Rebuild the rack demand from identified modules

Collect the complete rack population, including the CPU, communication and specialty modules, and the relevant I/O. Use the manufacturer’s consumption data for each item and the applicable calculation method. Keep each required rail separate in the worksheet so a shortage on one cannot disappear inside an acceptable total.

Record the installation assumptions and who checked them. A worksheet copied from a similar machine may omit an added communication module or a later modification. Tie the calculation to the current as-built rack, not merely to an equipment name that has remained unchanged through several upgrades.

For illustration, a hypothetical load needing more than 15 W from +5 V would exceed the documented PWR321 limit on that rail even if the combined load remained below 30 W. This is arithmetic explaining the constraint, not an approved design or a claim about any customer’s equipment.

Make the spare enquiry preserve the distinction

An enquiry for an IC693PWR321AA Series 90-30 supply should include the complete installed marking and the reviewed load requirement. The revision suffix belongs in the evidence, even when the family-level comparison uses the shorter PWR321 designation.

If engineering is considering an IC693PWR330 high-capacity supply, identify that proposal as a reviewed change rather than silently rewriting the original requisition. Confirm input requirements, supported installation, output allocation and the complete supplied identity. A catalogue phrase such as compatible does not replace that review.

Do not assume a numerically adjacent model is the same input variant. Keep the exact order code on the request and ask the supplier to identify any alternative explicitly. This is especially important when an inventory search returns a mixture of AC/DC-input and DC-input equipment with similar-looking housings.

What to ask for from a tested unit

A meaningful test record should identify the actual supply, its condition and what was checked. Ask whether the report concerns a simple power-on observation or a defined loaded assessment. The scope should be understandable to the plant reviewer without relying on a general passed sticker.

Do not turn a supplier test into an instruction for improvised bench work. Electrical tests and installation must be performed by qualified personnel using appropriate equipment, manufacturer guidance and the site’s isolation controls. Energizing a loose supply or probing an open cabinet is not a receiving procedure for untrained staff.

Separate the supply’s condition from the rack’s condition. A correctly identified replacement does not resolve a damaged connector, an excessive load or an upstream power problem. If the original failure mechanism remains uncertain, preserve that uncertainty in the work order rather than describing a replacement purchase as a completed diagnosis.

Release stock for a defined application

At receipt, compare the actual label, revision and included components with the approved offer. Retain the test evidence and flag discrepancies before the item is issued. If a substitution arrives without prior agreement, keep it on hold while engineering checks the proposed use.

The stock record should distinguish standard and high-capacity variants and link to the approved application list. Avoid a generic bin labelled 90-30 power supply. That description asks stores personnel to make a technical decision during an outage, often without access to the rack worksheet that justified the purchase.

Revisit the calculation after an approved rack change. A spare that was adequate for the original configuration may require review after new modules are installed. Treat the load record as part of change control, not as paperwork that becomes permanently valid once the first spare has been purchased.

Questions buyers ask

Why can two 30 W supplies behave differently in selection?

The total rating does not describe every individual output limit. Compare the required load on each rail and the combined demand against the exact supply specification, using the applicable manufacturer documentation.

Does high capacity mean the PWR330 can exceed 30 W overall?

No. In this comparison, the distinction concerns available +5 V capacity within the documented overall limit. Do not add individual output ratings together as if they were independently available at their maximum simultaneously.

Can we approve a spare from a photograph and a power-on test?

Those can support identification and limited condition evidence, but they do not establish the complete acceptance case. Review exact identity, application load, applicable documentation and agreed testing before releasing the spare.

What should we provide for a TOPNLMS quotation?

Send the installed label, complete part number, required quantity, acceptable condition and destination. Include the reviewed rail requirements or identify the engineer responsible for confirming them, and state whether alternatives may be proposed for approval.

A precise power-supply enquiry lets TOPNLMS focus on the identified hardware and required evidence. It also keeps the final rack-compatibility decision where it belongs: with the plant’s documented engineering review.
