330400 to 330425: A Fourfold Scaling Trap

Compare 330400 and 330425 sensitivity before replacing a casing accelerometer. Preserve measurement scale and mounting evidence, then request a quote.

A casing accelerometer can look entirely at home on a gearbox while producing the wrong engineering value in the monitoring system. The connector fits, the cable reaches, and the trend moves when the machine runs. None of those observations proves that the receiving channel is interpreting the sensor correctly.

The distinction between Bently Nevada 330400 and 330425 accelerometers is a useful example. Their sensitivity difference belongs in the spare specification, not in a troubleshooting conversation after the replacement. For a reliability team, the practical question is not simply whether the new sensor generates a signal. It is whether that signal still means the same acceleration to the monitor, historian, and people making maintenance decisions.

The number that changes the interpretation

The manufacturer’s 330400 and 330425 datasheet specifies nominal sensitivities of 100 mV/g and 25 mV/g respectively. It also distinguishes their peak acceleration ranges: 50 g for the 330400 and 75 g for the 330425. These are casing acceleration transducers, not shaft proximity probes. Neither a shared manufacturer nor a similar housing makes their measurement chains interchangeable.

Consider an idealized 2 g acceleration signal within the applicable operating conditions. At nominal sensitivity, the signal component is 200 mV for a 100 mV/g sensor and 50 mV for a 25 mV/g sensor. If the receiving channel still divides by 100 mV/g after a 25 mV/g sensor is fitted, it interprets that 50 mV component as 0.5 g. The displayed value is one quarter of the intended value. The reverse mismatch can produce a fourfold overstatement.

This example illustrates scaling, not a calibration procedure or a claim about a particular monitor’s complete signal processing. Filtering, integration, units, range, and channel configuration also matter. A plausible-looking trend is therefore weak evidence of a correct replacement.

Build the spare record around the measuring point

A useful stock record starts with the machine and measurement location. Identify the gearbox or bearing housing, the physical direction being measured, the channel receiving the signal, and the approved sensor order code. Then associate the relevant sensitivity, installed configuration, cable identification, mounting arrangement, and acceptance evidence with that location.

For a point whose approved bill of materials calls for that exact variant, the Bently Nevada 330400-02-00 casing accelerometer provides a specific product reference for an inquiry. The reference should travel with the approved monitoring configuration. It does not replace the configuration record, and a commercial listing alone cannot establish that the sensor is suitable for a protection function.

A different point may specify the Bently Nevada 330425-02-00 acceleration transducer. Keep that spare assignment separate unless engineering has approved a documented change. Generic compatibility language in a product address is not evidence that two sensor families can share every monitor setup. Request confirmation against the complete order code and receiving equipment documentation.

Mounting is part of the evidence, too

Correct electrical scaling does not compensate for a poor mechanical interface. The sensor must observe the intended casing motion through an appropriate mounting arrangement. A changed location, loose interface, damaged mounting surface, or unsuitable adapter can alter the measurement independently of the sensitivity setting.

The manufacturer’s accelerometer mounting-kit documentation treats mounting hardware and preparation as defined parts of the installation. Use the instructions applicable to the actual sensor and kit rather than copying a generic tightening value from another device. Photograph the installed arrangement before approved removal and retain identification of any adapter or mounting block.

For stores personnel, this creates a simple distinction: a sensor received into inventory is not automatically a complete replacement package. The maintenance work pack may also depend on documented mounting hardware, cable condition, and the correct interface at the measuring point. Establish those needs before the machine becomes unavailable.

Keep the trend history interpretable

A replacement creates a boundary in the asset’s measurement history. Record its time, reason, outgoing and incoming identities, and the approved configuration used for return to service. Without that boundary, a sudden improvement may be mistaken for a healthier machine when it actually reflects a scaling change.

Where the point contributes to alarms or protective actions, follow the site’s authorized change and functional-verification process. Do not compensate for an unexplained reading by casually moving alarm thresholds. The correct response is to establish the measurement chain and its approved behavior, with the responsible reliability and control specialists involved.

Useful acceptance evidence should be agreed before the job. It may include identification checks, an appropriate controlled verification of the measurement path, and comparison with a justified reference under documented conditions. Simply observing that a dashboard is green does not demonstrate correct sensitivity, channel assignment, or mechanical coupling.

Questions from maintenance and purchasing

Can I use a 330425 because a 330400 is unavailable?

Not as an assumed direct substitute. Their nominal sensitivities differ, and the complete sensor specification, monitor input requirements, configuration, mounting, and intended function need an engineering assessment. Any approved change also needs an appropriate acceptance plan. Procurement should not make that decision from appearance or availability.

Will a sensitivity mismatch always trigger a channel fault?

Do not rely on that. A channel can receive an apparently plausible changing signal while converting it with the wrong scale. Whether a diagnostic detects a particular mismatch depends on the receiving system. Successful communication or an active trend is not a substitute for checking the approved measurement configuration.

Should we keep both sensor families in the same spare bin?

Separate identification is prudent wherever both are installed. Organize stock by full order code and approved measuring-point assignments, with sensitivity visible in the inventory record. A common storage area can work, but picking instructions must prevent a similar-looking item from being treated as an interchangeable emergency spare.

What information makes a quotation useful?

Provide the complete order code, quantity, nameplate photographs, required condition, and documentation expectations. Add the installed monitor or channel reference and relevant mounting details when requesting a compatibility review. Distinguish an exact replacement request from a proposed redesign so the commercial response does not imply unapproved technical acceptance.

For a clearly identified casing-accelerometer requirement, contact TOPNLMS at [email protected] with the sensor code and measuring-point information. Request confirmation of the offered identity and available documentation before placing the order. A spare is most useful when the installation team can show exactly what it will restore.
